(yes, we know it’s Tuesday, but bank holidays definitely don’t count, right?…)

If there’s one thing we have a soft spot for here at ARTSCLASH, it’s a sassy electro-pop diva, and Little Boots is no exception. We loved her 2009 debut Hands (featuring the genius Earthquake, and Remedy, the second best song ever to do the Macarena to – seriously try it, it works so well…) and following the genius of singles Shake (the album’s definite highlight) and Every Night I Say A Prayer (both here on the album) we couldn’t wait for the follow-up, which dropped yesterday (sorry, we were on too massive a Public Service Broadcasting high to properly take notice…)

So what’s it like? Well, anyone expecting the instant iconic pop sugar-bursts of the first album is going to be disappointed. Nocturnes is an altogether more intense experience. Not that it could be described in any way as dark, despite the title. Really, the biggest change is in the decade of inspiration. Whereas Hands was often so ’80s you fully expected it to break into the Footloose dance at any moment, this album has far more of a ’90s vibe, often reminding you weirdly of CeCe Peniston’s classic Finally. At its best this gives us great songs in the singles and Strangers, but at its worst what you get is a sort of early noughties Kylie tribute act (so Dannii Minogue, amirite?!), as in Beat Beat, which is like Spinning Around taking itself too seriously, and would have been far better replaced with sadly missing single Headphones...

So…essentially this.

However, all in all it’s a pretty great dance album, with moments of utter excitement and the sense that Little Boots has so much more to give us, particularly in Satellites where she takes a very Earth-grounded album and blasts it into the pop stratosphere. We just have to hope they make moonboots small enough…
